Obsessive Compulsive are a four-piece band from Manchester and will be releasing their debut album, 'Dreams of Death and the Death of Dreams' on May 10th 2010. Over the past few years, Obsessive Compulsive have been widely touring the UK, and they have released two self-financed EPs: 'A Demon for Every Occasion' and 'The Corpses of Thought'. Their debut album will be released on their own label Vociferous.
Obsessive Compulsive are a band who stay true to an ethic of doing things their way, of escaping the 'corporate greed' they see in the music industry. From handing out flyers outside gigs to releasing their own CDs, they're not afraid of the hard work it takes to stay in control.
EGL Magazine were lucky enough to get our grubby mits on a copy of the album, and, quite frankly, have been rocking out to it ever since. Here's what we thought:
Despite 'Dreams of Death and the Death of Dreams' being the band's first full-length album, they don't need to try hard to convince anyone of their worth. This debut album stands up for itself, proving, in every single track, that Obsessive Compulsive know exactly what they're doing, and that they do it very well.
This album is packed full of dynamic and exciting punk riffs, but sung over the top, Kelii's vocals are full of soul and passion, drawing you right into the very heart of the band itself. The music has a very personal feel to it, almost like reading someone's diary. But don't mistake that for making Obsessive Compulsive just another punk band oozing with the same old teenage angst we've heard over and over; these guys really have something to say, and they deserve to be heard.
It is that sense of tenderness and vulnerability that make Obsessive Compulsive stand out from their peers; inducing a strangely addictive sense of unease that will keep you coming back for more. There's also something very dark and sinister wrapped into the tracks, something just out of sight, stood in the shadows.
'Dreams of Death and the Death of Dreams' is an album that will appeal to a wide range of people; pulling in hardcore fans as well as emo, punk and people simply looking for good, solid rock. Obsessive Compulsive have such a passion for what they do, it's a passion you won't be able to stop yourself from latching onto, a passion that will very quickly make Obsessive Compulsive one of your favourite bands.
Obsessive Compulsive are currently on tour until the end of May, hitting the roads again in September. You can see their tour dates on their MySpace page. The album is released on May 10th and, put simply, you'll be an idiot not to buy it.
