Swedish metal band, Midnight Caine, was originally put together in 2007 by Fredrik Andrén (vocals) and Joakim Galle (bass), with an idea of focusing on rhythms and giving life to a particular pulse. They experimented with different sounds and styles until one song stood as the foundation stone of the band, dictating the future direction that they would move in. And now, the band seeks to write songs which carry the musical presence that has become the sound of Midnight Caine.
Since discovering their niche, Midnight Caine have progressed quickly, and in 2008 they were one of the winners in the Garden of Delight cover contest, earning them a place on the compilation album 'A Tribute to G.O.D'. Soon after, they were invited to take part in another compilation released by 272 Records in California.
In 2009, the band's lineup changed, bringing new energies, ideas and styles to the mix with Mattias Balk on guitar, Mikael Nordström on drums and Henrik Brifors on keyboards.
That September, Midnight Caine released their debut album, 'Dead & Reborn'. It was top rated by Metal Express Radio, giving the band one hour live on air, with the chance to personally share their music and the story behind the band with their listeners.
Midnight Caine are currently working on their new album, set for release later this year. They are also touring all over Europe, including the UK, promoting the band and connecting with their fans.
We caught up with vocalist Fredrik Andrén, and asked him a few questions about the band and their hopes for the future.
How do you feel the band has grown and developed between the release of your debut album, and the upcoming release of your new album?
I definitely feel that the band has grown into becoming more complete and determined; each member has developed individually and is contributing a lot more in detail. We have found a solid sound and we now know instinctively how to reach that certain ambience that we feel is Midnight Caine. We have also added a lot more orchestral features to our new release and the sound picture is more grand than on the debut album. So it has been a pretty big step forward for the band and the music and on individual levels as well.
You have created a unique sound which defines Midnight Caine, how important do you think it is to stand out in today's music industry?
I think it is very important to stand out in today's music industry, both in skill and attitude. It´s a great competition out there and it´s really important to show that you are determined and know what you are doing, to be sure about your goals and to be hard working. You really need to be professional in all aspects if you are going to gain any respect for your work. If you believe in what you are doing and if you are true to your work I think you will get there eventually. As long as it´s fun there are no limits really.
It´s sometimes hard to surprise the audience and people in the music business today. At the same time it´s an unlimited creative field of opportunities where almost anything is possible. It´s very exiting.
What are your ambitions for the future of Midnight Caine?
Our ambitions are to gain a larger fanbase and to be full time working musicians. We are also working hard on touring more and visiting more countries. To go on the road and play gigs is really the highlight of our work and that´s where you get rewarded for all your hard work. And as soon as our second album is out we will start working on the next, so it´s an ongoing process for sure.
You can catch Midnight Caine on 16th July 2010 at Pitch Black at The Appleby in Burton on Trent. So, if you want to see them, you'd better get yourself along as this is the only UK date lined up at the moment, but Fredrik told us "We would love to tour the UK more fully. Maybe we will come back next year for more shows. We strongly believe in our possibilties to increase our popularity in the UK. It´s a really nice place to be so we would be delighted to come back."
