Alt Model Interview: Lady Violet Arcane
North Carolina alternative model Lady Violet Arcane boasts a skill-set far beyond posing in front of the camera.
Beyond her vast modelling experience, Violet has been performing since the age of 18, entertaining audiences with talents ranging from from fire breathing and belly dancing to horse riding and stilt walking. She also designs and makes many of her own costumes as well as dabbling in set and prop design. She is currently filming the movie 'Live Evil' with Siminan Tales.
How did you first get interested in the alternative scene?
I grew up your average teenage 'mall-Goth'. My brothers' interest in heavy metal drew me to look at the world differently than the preppy bubble-gum chewers I attended school with. My mother taught me how to sew and be crafty, and always encouraged me to be myself, though she didn't approve of my spikey-collar lifestyle as a minor. Years later, she is one of my biggest supporters. I posted on gothic.net a lot as a teen, but it wasn't until I was 18, however, and started going out to Goth clubs that I began digging into all the facets of the dark alternative subculture.
Besides modelling, you are also a performer with a huge range of skills. How did you get involved in these?
Where to begin...? My stage performance experience started around the age of 18. My local Goth club housed a small fetish performance troupe, and I kind of fell into it. Over the years, I picked up skills here and there - while not a burlesque dancer, I can pull it off, and the many circus folk I hung around with taught me the basics of fire, acrobatics, and stage tricks. Some things I simply decided to dive into - I had my grinder bra custom-made on a whim, and took aerial classes to expand my repertoire. Learning new tricks and skills keep me on my toes, as boredom and stagnation are enemy number 1 to the mind.
You create and modify some of your own outfits. What's your favourite costume that you've put together?
I have created a Sea Witch outfit - lots of purpley/green taffetta, pearls, and a huge headdress. The headdresss is has a fin-like mohawk and is several feet high, encrusted with shells and stones. It is about 8lbs in weight. I will shoot it as soon as it gets warm enough to get out to the beach. I can hardly wait!
You're currently filming Live Evil. How are you finding this experience?
It is great! I love the production crew and the other cast members I work with. I play an evil being that brings the worst fears of people to life in a small town. It has been a wonderful experience, and I can't wait to see the finished product.
What was your biggest fashion mistake?
I wasn't a very fashionable teen, so it is convenient that I took to wearing all dark colors early on - this reduced my chances of clashing haha!
Who is your biggest style icon?
I love ladies such as Clara Bow, Ingrid Bergman, and Liz Taylor. I can't pull off those kinds of looks however, so I'd have to say that Vampira, the original Goth Temptress, is my style idol. All of her predecessors, including the Morticias and Elvira, are also influential.
What are your plans for your future career?
I'm hoping to get more film work under my belt after Live Evil, and with my new website up and running, I project hitting the west coast of the US with another round of stage performances before the end of 2013.
