Fear Incorporated are a three-piece UK gothic band who are bringing something new, and, quite frankly, just a touch eccentric to the world of gothic music. Uber-goth, shrouded in darkness and, apparently, partial to recruiting band members from graveyards, EGL Magazine confronted their fears and had a peek into the dark world of Fear Incorporated.
The band describe themselves as a 'theatre macabre avant garde band', a musical direction that they believe 'was vital to explore which was, until now, undiscovered musical territory.'' This theatrical element is threaded into the dramatic, almost operatic style of their songs, each one filled with grand, sweeping musical statements, and enough depth to easily fill a concert-hall with sound. But this doesn't make their music in any way inaccesible, their industrial edge could see them added to the playlist in any goth club; you might just have to be a little imaginative with your dance moves.
Fear Incorporated may be a new band in itself, but it is made up of veterans of the alternative music scene, bringing together musicians from very different styles such as cyberpunk and psychobilly. The band are proud of the style mix, claiming it to be a 'collision of sounds' brought together by a single inspiration. When asked what it is that makes Fear Incorporated unique, it is this mix of genres they refer to again, saying:
'We fuse and integrate many styles of alternative music and traverse a dark path few have taken before us.'
Using a legend as the theme has given their songs a very strong narrative quality; songs that sound like they belong in a midnight performance at the Theatre of the Damned. Mixing well-placed sound effects with cyber-goth synthesizer effects, Fear Incorporated have created such a strong sense of character; their music has a true persona of its own, allbeit a sick, twisted and terrifying one.
The inspiration that brings the band together, and the theme of their as-yet untitled album due out later this year, is the legend of Alexander Sawney Bean; a man who, along with his wife and children, is said to have terrorised Scotland in the 16th Century with acts of robbery, murder and cannibalism. After many years, their secret existence was finally discovered during a failed ambush. A 400-strong mob then arrested the family, brutally executing them without trial.
This dark and morbid legend provided a rich source of inspiration for their music:
'A vile and chilling character with such fearsome and remarkable attributes - who else but Alexander Sawney Bean?'
The band are currently rehearsing for their upcoming tour which will take in Germany and Japan as well as the UK. And what do Fear Incorporated have planned for their audiences?
'We will unleash a cornucopia of madness,a maelstrom of the macabre. For now we leave you quivering in curiousity and anticipation.'
